Frequently Asked Questions

Why Private Care?
It is a known fact that the NHS resources are stretched to it’s limit with individual maternity units delivery rate of approximately between 2500-5000 babies per annum. Not surprisingly, it would be impossible to provide individualised care that is tailored to individual woman’s needs. At The London Midwifery Practice our care is centred around your requirement, while providing both continuity of care and carer. This is possible as we do not book more than 2-3 clients in any given month.
How do I access Independent Midwives?
You can access us via “contact us”. You can also contact other independent midwives via independent midwives association website. Or write to obtain a register of independent Midwives from Independent Midwives Association, C/O 1 The Great Quarry, Guildford, Surry, GU1 3XN; enclosing a self addressed/stamped envelope.
Do I have to have my antenatal checks in the hospital
No. Normally your midwife will come to you at a convenient time for you both and will carry out all your checks in the comfort of your own home. If you are a working mum you can have your checks done by your midwife in a relaxing environment at the Harley Street practice where we are permitted to use the consulting rooms. This is also where your scans are carried out.
How many scans do I have to have?
Normally two scans are recommend during pregnancy one at 12 weeks (Nuchal scan) and at 20-22 weeks (Anomaly Scan). Subsequent scans may be recommended if there are any query about your baby’s growth and well-being, presentation, or placental site etc.
Do I have to have scans and blood screening?
No. Although these are recommended, none are compulsory.
Can I have my baby in the hospital I am booked at?
Yes. Your midwife will be able to accompany you to all hospitals and remain with you throughout your labour. Our role will depend on local arrangement and our clients needs.
What are your practice view on pain-relief in labour
Our philosophy is not to enforce our opinion on our client but rather provide information on all methods of pain-relief so that you can make informed choices. There are pros and cons with all forms of pain-relief and your midwife will discuss with you your choices whether in a hospital setting or a home birth.
How involve does my partner have to be?
As much or as little you and him wish for him to be. Our care is based around the needs of expectant parents. The aim is to ensure that you enjoy the experience and that neither you, or your partner is traumatised by the birth experience.
When will I have to pay?
This will depend on what care package you have chosen. For pay as you go payment scheme you are invoiced after each visit. For full package care you can pay in one lump sum or in 3 instalment, first instalment payable at booking.
Will my insurance cover my maternity care?
Insurance companies in the UK generally only pay if there are Obstetric complications during pregnancy and child-birth. In our experience most American based insurance companies cover the cost of normal pregnancy and child-birth; However we recommend that you clarify this with your insurance company first. The London Midwifery Practice looks to its clients for their fees and any claim must be made directly by the client from their insurance company.
